At the age of 72, Mary Delany created an incredibly intricate style of paper cutting (or decoupage) that mimicked the flowers/botany that she studied and admired. It should come as no surprise that her inspiration would be passed on to South Africa’s acclaimed female winemaker Ginny Povall. Originally from Massachusetts, she made her home on her farm, Protea Heights, sitting on the outskirts of Stellenbosch and for several decades, established a reputation as the first farm in South Africa to cultivate their national flower - the Protea. While she continues to grow flowers, she also, since 2009, has expanded the farm and planted several hectares of vineyard. In the case of the 2017 Pinot Noir, the grapes were sourced from the Paul Cluver farm in Elgin, known for its deep roots in the cool climate South African region. Pressed whole cluster, the wine was raised for nine months in old oak to maintain a level of elegance. This Pinot’s delicate spice, cherry and wild raspberry fruit notes are beautifully integrated with the light body and gentle tannins.
