Eva Fricke Lorch Trocken Riesling 2018
100% Riesling. The daughter of two doctors, Eva Fricke was born in a small village in Lower Saxony which is beer country. Inspired by an adventurous grandmother, she decided to take a summer job after her penultimate year of school on a vineyard in South Africa. It was here that Eva’s love affair with the grape first began. Thereafter, she studied viticulture and oenology at the world-famous Geisenheim, then worked at wineries in Bordeaux, Barolo, Ribera del Duero, Hunter Valley, and then finally Rheingau. Eva is definitely in the new generation of German, and European winemaker, who has traveled the world and brought those experiences home with them. After working in the Rheingau for other wineries, in 2006 she made her first vintage. Eva only grows Riesling on the steep slopes of Lorch in the Rheingau which is made even more difficult because she uses biodynamic principles in the vineyard. Though walking up those slopes to farm is back-breaking work her wines perfectly exhibit the minerality of the slate and quartzite soils. They have energy. They have life. This bottling is from several sites in Lorch, all on a grey slate, and is fermented completely dry. Bright citrus aromas, juicy on the palate with a dense structure, the wine finishes with a mineral, salty twang. It’s a great intro to Eva’s wines and shows why she is one to watch in the wine world!
