Bachelder Willms 1983 Plantation Chardonnay 2018
After walking the whole Willms vineyard and tasting grapes over four years in a row with Esther and Erv Willms, it has become clear that it is the Eastern side of this old-vine ‘Line II’ vineyard that shows the most subtly-nuanced minerality and greatest balance.. Our first Chardonnay from Niagara-on-theLake - from old vines planted in 1983 - is made in the same way as all our others, with the terroir and vine age being the only difference. It is broad, spicy, long, elegant and subtly mineral. For the ‘East-to-West Niagara Terroir experiment,’ there is 0% new oak in any of the 3 cuvées, just 1-4-year-old French oak, a majority from Damy in Meursault. Terroir Description: Both the Chardonnay and the Gamay Noir are from old vines planted in 1983 - the Willms Vineyard (which was called "Sandstone" in an earlier incarnation) is uniquely located between two bodies of water, some 6 km from the lake, and about 4 from the Niagara River. It is a combo of silt, loamy-clay, gravel, limestone and sand. Tasting Note: “The Willms vineyard exudes golden honeyed melon and peach notes on the nose, seemingly an indicator of its Niagara-On-The-Lake origins - however upon the first sip it has a nectared, focused richness and a surprising lightness of being. A surprising “delicatesse” is subtly wound around a tight, long, subtly-fine finish.” – Thomas
